Paralelni svety

'Parallel Worlds', as its title translates into English, is the latest Czech-International co-production to venture into the favourite realm of fantasy. Director Petr Vaclav, a relative young Turk, makes an enthusiastic foray into both the world of dreams and the dance between bliss and agony in relationships. Karel Roden and Lenka Vlasakova star, along with sexy ex-fairy tale actress Jitka Schneiderova. Top-notch cinematography vies with the story line and performances for the audience's attention. The film is in Czech but with English subtitles at selected theatres.

Café Fiesta

Czech Mex food doesn't get a lot of respect, but if anyone's going to raise its rep a bit, it's Café Fiesta. True, the refried beans are actually steamed and the tortilla chips are from Tesco but the quesadillas are laced with fiery jalapeno peppers, as is the sopa Azteca (a rich spicy soup that's the house specialty). Like all other entrees at Café Fiesta, they're served in mountainous portions. Krusovice beer is on tap, a perfect complement to this cuisine.

Art@Belgium

This is a whistle-stop tour of art in Belgium over the last 150 years. All the big hitters are there, so as you would expect you'll see Ensor, Permeke, Delvaux and Magritte. There's also room for comic-strip artists such as François Schuiten and 19th-century painter Hippolyte Bulanger. There are also brief resumés of the artists' careers to accompany a single work by each artist. The location may not be the best, but it's worth a visit all the same.

Restoration in Tuscany

This spring, several significant restoration projects have been completed in Tuscany. In Florence, one of Masaccio's masterpieces - his fresco of the Trinity - is now on display again in the church of Santa Maria Novella after two years of work. In the central nave of the same church hangs Giotto's wooden Christ, back in place after 12 years. In the church of San Domenico in Arezzo, another wooden Christ, this time by Giotto's teacher Cimabue, has been restored after insect damage.

Compay Segundo

This 90-year-old Cuban guitarist and singer was first brought to the attention of western audiences by Wim Wenders' film 'Buena Vista Social Club', in which he was one of the stars. He's here in Japan to promote his most recent album, a work which features many sounds, largely from the 1920s and 1930s, similar to those performed in the film. On this tour Segundo is hopefully going to be joined by many of the artistes who appear on his album.

Shaping the Great City

This exhibition focuses for the first time on the explosion of architectural ideas in the years around the First World War. This was a period when architects looked for ways to express a newfound sense of urbanity and modernity. Centring on the Habsburg Empire of Central Europe from 1890 to 1937, this exhibition takes visitors through galleries organised on the model of bustling streets and busy public places, in which projections of slides and early films mingle with architectural drawings and models, photographs, posters and books.
