The Champs

These modern masters of swing play together for two weeks in Barcelona: Ximo Tébar is one of the finest local jazz guitarists around, while Joey DeFrancesco is probably the best Hammond organ player of his generation anywhere in the world, and Idris Muhammed is an internationally known jazz drummer. When playing together, they prefer to call themselves the Champs, and they haven't had any complaints about the title so far. Make sure to book ahead for what promises to be a popular series of high quality sets.

Animated Film Festival

Fart jokes and phallic innuendo might be a strange way to celebrate the 19th birthday of an animated film festival but, if you decide to open it with 'South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut', that's what you get. Despite that, the festival will prove that there's far more to animation than Homer Simpson's furrowed brow, providing an ideal forum for wannabe cartoonists to learn the tricks of the trade, with numerous workshops and guests speakers including 'Star Wars' animation director Rob Coleman. A competition for Belgian shorts (films, not trousers) will also be launched.

Jaragua

DJ Caramelo leads the Latin-American sounds at Jaragua, a club just above then river near Porta San Niccolò. Expect steamy sounds for hot summer nights on a tiny dance floor where you can practise your salsa, merengue and cha-cha. If you don't know the steps, there is a Latin dance school every night. Cocktails are, of course, south American - Banana Mama, Jaragua, Culo Bello et al. Entrance is free but sadly drinks are not.
