Mercury Lounge
217 E. Houston St., between Essex and Ludlow Sts. (260-4700; www.mercuryloungenyc.com). Once a gravestone parlor, the Mercury has attracted an amazing number of big-name acts, running the gamut from folk to pop to noise, to its fairly small-time room. Past standouts: spoken-word artist Maggie Estep, Morphine, and Mary Lou Lord. A spectacular sound system attracts arbiters of hip to the nightly shows. Cover varies (cash only). Box office open M-Sa noon-7pm.
Roseland Ballroom
239 W. 52nd St., between Broadway and Eighth Ave. (777-6800). Sizzling in the 40s as a swing dance hall, the ballroom is now a decently priced concert club featuring major-label Alt-rock and Hip-Hop. In the past year, Bob Dylan, Dave Mathews, Beck, Jamiroquai and many, many others have rocked this newly renovated space. Tickets $15-30.
